There’s a touch of Lee Fierro’s Mrs Kintner from Jaws about the outraged register of Jess’s suffering, a sense of a character teetering between tears and talons, implosion and explosion. Three cheers, then, for Julia Roberts, who steals the show as Kasten’s bereaved former partner Jess Cobb, playing the withering effects of grief (“You look a million years old”) with a resonant conviction that is as unshowy as it is affecting. Only when restaging some of the original’s set-piece thrills does Ray seem completely in control of the material, a talismanic chase through Dodger Stadium efficiently executed, providing a much-needed interlude of pulse-racing tension. Occasionally, there are echoes of the broodingly subversive menace that fuelled Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, making it all the more jarring when Ray intercuts some ill-judged moments of comedy including – in true Shakespeare in Love fashion – a “bit with a dog”. Julia Roberts plays the withering effects of grief with a conviction that is as unshowy as it is affecting But not even Alfred Molina can breathe life into hackneyed lines like “God, I hope you’re wrong about this…”, his accent wobbling back and forth across the Atlantic depending upon how cross he’s meant to be. Dean Norris is in winning form as doughty sidekick Bumpy Willis, and Michael Kelly gives good snide as the slimy FBI creep whose sources are sacred. There is meant to be a broiling bond between these two could-be lovers, but the fact that they have to keep clumsily reminding us about it (“There’s just one problem, she wasn’t you”) speaks volumes about its on-screen absence. Kidman fares less well as Claire, habitually twirling something around her fingers to indicate anxiety before passing her nervous habit on to Kasten, a detail the film does not make light of. Yet time and again the drama spirals into cliched foolishness and rule-bending procedural pastiche from which only a typically engrossing turn by Ejiofor can save it. Having previously directed Shattered Glass and Breach, the Captain Phillips screenwriter should be on home ground with this twisty mix of deception, action and intrigue. While El Secreto de Sus Ojos was rooted in the emergent “dirty war” turmoil of 70s Argentina, Ray’s update seems more flippantly opportunistic in its co-opting of America’s “war on terror” to explain away the more credibility-stretching turns of the narrative. Skipping between its two time periods (grey hairs and walking sticks provide handy temporal locators), Secret in Their Eyes gestures toward the more portentous themes of the original but fails to convince in its transposition of context. In compact fashion, the film lays out its underlying themes: the nature of the gaze, the paranoia of surveillance culture, the potential corruption of authority, the loneliness of passion, the elusive meaning of a “look”. From here, we flash back 13 years to 2002, where Kasten and Sloan meet in the aftermath of 9/11 (a “United we stand” poster frames their first encounter), he as an FBI investigator, she as deputy DA, awaiting ID card photography. Guiltily obsessed with pursuing the killer of a former colleague’s daughter – a grieving mother replacing the traumatised widower of the original – Kasten returns to his old LA hunting ground, where he attempts to persuade Nicole Kidman’s district attorney Claire Sloan (“Look at you, up on the fifth floor…”) to reopen a long-dead case on the strength of an elusive visual match. We open in stylish fashion with Chiwetel Ejiofor’s former FBI investigator Ray Kasten scanning faces on a computer, his own visage seen through the screen which is itself reflected in the lenses of his glasses. The result, on which a supportive Campanella takes an executive-producer credit, may have saleable marquee cachet, but rarely rises above the level of humdrum multiplex functionality. Yet here we have the writer-director Billy Ray assembling an eye-catching transatlantic cast to transpose key riffs and images from the Argentinian original to US soil. A tortured tale of love lost and a murder investigation revisited, the film (a huge domestic and solid international hit) hardly needed an English language remake. ![]() ![]() Nine of those 40 prospects have become customers, with 14 more still ongoing. Of the 200 cards we sent out to our target prospects, 40 led to conversations for a conversion rate of 20%. The use of technology made this quite an expensive campaign, but it was worth it. These cards were novel and memorable it’s not every day people receive a video in the mail. We sent out 200 personalized video cards which mentioned each prospect by name and included a quirky explanation of our video production process. This last example was by far our most expensive campaign - but also our most lucrative. In other words, this campaign was a great investment. That customer has spent over £30k with us and also referred us to two new customers. This campaign cost us around £170 and resulted in two meetings, one of which converted into a customer. In other words, we wanted to offer value while also keeping our brand front of mind. The purpose of this campaign was to provide prospects with a useful piece of content to leave on their desks. We sent this guide to 30 individual prospects. Video Distribution Guidesįor our next outbound campaign, we converted our guide to building a video distribution strategy into a printed book. We spent around £250 and received nothing in return. For whatever reason, the campaign didn’t work. Either the “organic” theme was lost on people, or they simply weren’t in the market for a solution to help them with organic search traffic. So, we sent jars of organic jam to our top 50 prospects, including a note which asked them if they needed help with organic search.Ĭrickets. This next idea stemmed from a campaign in which we explored using video (and our sister SEO agency’s services) to help improve organic traffic. The campaign cost around £250, but didn’t directly generate any new opportunities for our business. We even got some follow-up calls, including one from a prospect who told us the cookies were a tacky gesture. Maybe they didn’t taste great (we never sampled them!) Some arrived broken, while others arrived at the wrong address. Unfortunately, the cookies seemed to annoy many of the prospects we sent them to. The idea was simple enough: we sent 100 branded cookies featuring pictures of our office dog to 100 sales prospects. CookiesĪs we said earlier, not every outreach campaign is a winner - and our next example is one that didn’t pan out as well as we hoped. The whole campaign cost us £400, and we generated over £50,000 in revenue. The toolkits led to us booking five meetings, ultimately winning two new customers. The campaign was a success, as it generated a lot of positive buzz - and more importantly, it generated revenue. The catch was, we removed a set of pliers from each toolbox, and sent a message which read, “Something missing from your marketing toolkit? We have it!” We sent packages to 50 of our top prospects, with each package containing a mini-toolbox. The first of our creative outreach ideas was one of our most successful. 'Sleepless' is one of those movies that needed to be a lot better or a lot worse to make much of an impression. This is one of those thrillers that’s a corker once it gets going, which is to say it’s a big of a drag before it does. I will cover this in greater detail in another post. I’m still tweaking this selection logic, but it works on roughly 80% of the sites I’ve tested. First I find the parent node with the most children, and then extract the text based on the selector (e.g. My current approach uses a mix of HTML node counting, elimination, and DOM selection. Below I have re-written the previous Bart code to use Cortex:Ĭomparing the incorrect and correct selection in a web page. Cortex simplifies the process of deploying machine learning models to the cloud. While I could manually set this all up via the AWS Console, I deferred the manual work to an open source platform called Cortex. I ended up using an AWS virtual machine with Nvidia T4 GPU (more on this below). At this point I turned to AWS to get a souped-up cloud machine (EC2) on a cluster configured with a GPU. What’s more, the model is quite large (the “ bart-large-cnn” model is 1.5GB), so I needed to ensure it was pre-loaded before performing inference. It wasn’t immediately obvious to me, but a GPU is required to perform a faster inference. As a result, it performs best on news articles, as compared to other types of text. The model was pretrained on a huge text dataset and fine-tuned to summarize news articles. This code shows that there is already a model we can use, and we feed it the text to summarize. I will explain how each component works, starting from the summarization component on the right, and finishing with the Slack component on the left. The flow is initiated when a Slack user mentions the bot with a URL, and the data then flows through the remaining components and is ultimately returned to the Slack user as a summary. The diagram below shows what each component of the tldr bot will do. What’s great is that this model is ready to be used as a library.
